It’s time we throw down another #MusicMonday around here so we can all have some good jams to listen to for the next week or two. Keeping our mind on the ultimate Creator by enjoying man’s creativity.
So you know the drill: great music, great writing, great theology – these are the things that make a great song worthy of a #MusicMonday here.
This week we have a bit of new, a bit of worship, and a bit of quality everyday-jams plus a song (and album) you’re going to want to put on repeat and wear it out if you haven’t already.
So in no particular order, here’s a few joining the playlists recently:
Come and Make Us Free (EP) by Zac Hicks
This one is a really solid EP with super solid theological lyrics that are congregational worship style. However, these are actually musically super appealing as well. We get a mix of male a female vocals on the album. (The link will take you to the Spotify album to give it a listen and see if you dig it).
Live In Focus (EP) by Kings Kaleidoscope
Of course, you should already be following these folks from us mentioning their new excellent song just a month ago when we first started this ongoing series. However, this album just released and is so right in so many ways. Upbeat yet emotional, all sorts of different sounds and musical niceties going on, and of course, great lyrics and theology. It borders on odd in some of the songs and likely won’t be for everyone, but no song ever is.
And since we just did a few pretty super new EP albums, let’s balance this out with a jam that’s a bit older now, but that has nevertheless been on repeat for days now:
Brother by NEEDTOBREATH
The lyrics are down below, and are pretty stellar, yet the story behind the song also “ups” it’s impact: The short of it is that the two brothers in the band, Bo and Bear Rineheart, had a bit of a rivalry and falling out over time that left them both feeling a bit worn out and discouraged. In the end of some time home and apart, the older brother, Bear, decided it was time for a speech on why the needed to be brothers and not bandmates and thus they probably needed to quit being a band. However, Bo had his own speech, and when they worked it out, he wrote this song.
They, themselves, called it a bit “cheesy” lyrically, but the principal of it all is that when you’re always trying to one-up the other person in any relationship, it’s never good. The way in relationship works best is by both people giving and pouring themselves into it for the sake of the other.
This video was released just a few month ago, with an alternative version to the album song, featuring Gavin DeGraw. Hard to say which version is better, so watch the video and then just go check out the entire album if you haven’t yet. The whole album is killer good!
LYRICS:
Ramblers in the wilderness
Yeah we can’t find what we need
We get a little restless from the searching
Get a little worn down in between
Like a bull chasing a matador
is man left to his own schemes
But everybody needs someone beside ‘em
Shining like a lighthouse from the sea
Brother let me be your shelter
Never leave you all alone
I can be the one you call when you’re low
Brother let me be your fortress
when the night winds are driving on
Be the one to light the way
Bring you home
Face down in the desert now
There’s a cage locked around my heart
I found a way to drop the keys where my failures were
now my hands can’t reach that far
I ain’t made for a rivalry
I could never take the world alone
I know that in my weakness I am strong
but it’s your love that brings me home
Brother let me be your shelter
Never leave you all alone
I can be the one you call when you’re low
Brother let me be your fortress
when the night winds are driving on
Be the one to light the way
Bring you home
And when you call
And need me near
Say it when you go
Brother I’m right here
And on those days
When the sky begins to fall
You’re the blood of my blood
We can get through it all
Brother let me be your shelter
Never leave you all alone
I can be the one you call when you’re low
Brother let me be your fortress
when the night winds are driving on
Be the one to light the way
Bring you home
Be the one to light the way
Bring you home
