In the 23rd Psalm, our Good Shepherd spreads a table for us in the presence of our enemies. “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” Before us today, we have the Lord’s Table that has been prepared for us. And we are reminded that we come to the table, while still on this earth, in the midst of the fight of faith, while enemies still surround us. And in this time we have yet been anointed with oil, which is to say, we have the anointing of the Holy Spirit, poured out upon us and given to us. So while we eat, we are nourished by the Spirit of God. And the cup that we drink, it overflows. The blood of Christ which forgives our sins and makes us clean, is a fountain, it is an overflowing cup, and we are reminded of that again as we come to the table, having our sins forgiven.
