Every Advent season, Christians across the globe reorient themselves around the truth that the Word became flesh. But have we become so familiar with this truth that we have missed the scandal of it? Do we/you know how big of a deal it is that Jesus came to earth? Let me give you my number 1 reason why I think we have such little “Awe” when we hear the words “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
The fundamental problem with humanity is humanity. The Bible tells us that we are created in the image of God but that we rebelled against God. Time and time again, the Bible gives to humanity the title “sinners”. We, however, struggle to believe what the Bible teaches us about ourselves. We find ways to disagree with Eph 2:1-3 “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience- among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.” and Titus 3:3 “For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another”. Instead of agreeing with the Bible, we prefer to believe that our souls actually look like the following.
If these photos accurately communicate the beauty of the human heart then it is quite understandable that the Word would become flesh and dwell among us. I mean “Why wouldn’t Jesus come to befriend and save us? Look how wonderful we are.
But if the bible is true about human sinfulness, and it is, then it would be appropriate to come up with a more accurate picture that communicates what humanity actually look like to a Holy God. This an Orc from The Lord of the Rings?
