Intentional childlessness, abortion, and sodomy are all sins according to the Bible. Why? What’s the big deal? A few thoughts.
Intentional Childlessness
Why on earth would I say intentional childlessness is sinful? Making statements like that feels way too personal. Even writing it makes me feel a little weird. It would be easier just to let married couples make the decision to have children or not. Many married couples are making that choice in our day, both non-Christians and Christians alike.
Even in Christian circles, the decision to have children or not isn’t in the category of sin and obedience. I have never heard a sermon on whether or not it was right or wrong for married couples to have children or not. But the Bible does speak to this issue, and it is an issue to be sure.
Abortion
I will get a hearty “Amen” from many of you who are still scratching your head about the last couple of paragraphs. Abortion is the killing of an innocent child. If you are pro-choice there is probably nothing I can say that will change our mind. I could ask you to view the procedure for a second and third-trimester abortion, but I am assuming you already know that children are being ripped apart limb by limb in the womb of their mothers. Somehow you are okay with that, so I don’t think the following will matter all that much even though the following is a greater reason to hate abortion.
In Luke 1:41,44, 2:5 God calls the baby in the womb of Elizabeth and Mary, a baby. God declares what is in the womb. Inside of a pregnant mother’s belly is a baby. Sorry for stating the obvious, but that is needed today. Did I clearly state that the mother also a woman? Just to be clear. Then in Luke 2:12 we find Jesus in the manger and guess what he was called? A baby in a manger. God used the same word for a baby inside and outside of the womb because a baby is a baby before and after it is born.
Therefore, the killing of a baby while it is in the womb is the same thing as killing a baby outside of the womb. I should not have to convince you that that is wrong. Illinois, are you listening?
Sodomy
God condemns all forms of homosexuality. Romans 1 shows us, that the world had so rebelled against God that mankind actually turned on nature itself. The rebellion is so bad that we don’t even know how to have sex. To be accurate, all forms of sex that are outside the gift of a marriage between a man and a woman, are condemned by the bible. All sex outside of marriage is sinful. Pretty simple. So why specifically address sodomy?
The Creation Mandate
What do intentional childlessness, abortion, and sodomy all have in common? All three of these sins are at war with God and his creation mandate. What is the creation mandate you ask? Here it is from Gen. 1:27-18
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Intentional childlessness, abortion, and sodomy, all look back to God and say “Life ends with me! We will not be fruitful and multiply.”
Friends, the sexual revolution always has been and always will be a war against the creation mandate. Sexuality that is an end in itself is at war with God. Yet countless millions of people around the globe, hold hands together and arrogantly boast of their freedom. Slavery has always masked itself as freedom.
But let’s just say you don’t buy the creation mandate as a command for Christians today. Okay, show me just one example of a married couple in the Bible who were intentionally childless. It’s not there.
To the contrary, if you put your nose in the Bible and soak in Biblical culture, you will look up at the world and start questioning it. The more you are acquainted with the Bible, the more you will question the world. The more acquainted you are with the world, the more you will question the Bible.
Affirmation Vs. Forgiveness
Satan gives affirmation. Jesus gives forgiveness. Here lies the offense. People who are living in any of the three of these sins will easily find other people to affirm their choices. Affirmation is not a synonym for love. Jesus comes along and affirms no one. Jesus came to forgive sinners, and that is the problem. Forgiveness presupposes sin and sin is an intolerable word in a culture of affirmation. If you want, go on your quest to find people who agree with you, but you will never find forgiveness. Satan loves to affirm unrepentant people.
The Gospel
There is better news. Jesus came to live the life we (Sinners) should have lived. He obeyed God’s law perfectly. He did not mock God’s law as if it was outdated and sinful. Then Jesus went to a cross to die in the place of actual people. The life Jesus lived, the death, he died, the blood, he spilled and the grave he walked out of all had names attached to it. Names of sinners who looked at God’s law and thought they knew better.
The work of Jesus was not impotent. It is powerful to save. But be sure, no sinner will come to the cross to find affirmation. But any sinner, murder, sexual sinner, who comes made willing to repent, will be forgiven. Meet Jesus today, and then leave your life of sin. If you are a Christian married couple who can have children, then obey God. Be fruitful and multiply and let’s fill this earth with people who love God’s law!
