A scenario concerning Christian Liberty and Alcohol.
A person grows up in a fundamentalist type background. This person was taught that alcohol is sin. Don’t drink it, try it, look at it, or go to a place that serves it. Alcohol is the drink of the devils. Then all of the sudden this person makes a complete 180. They discover Christian liberty. Beer becomes a top 5 favorite word in their vocabulary. Like a college freshman uses the word “Coffee” this person finds any nook and cranny of a conversation to use the “B” word. They’re so happy to have been delivered from that old Pharisaical way! You know this person right? Is this you? Please consider the following:
The Lie: Christian Liberty itself is the message that brings liberty. So always talk about it. Always flaunt your freedoms. Show people how strong you are! Make all those “Pharisees” squirm. They will see how attractive your prideful boasting in your freedoms is and want to be free like you!
The Truth: Only the Gospel liberates. Those with true Christian Liberty understand that the message is not liberty itself, but Jesus. A Christian not only free to partake but free to abstain. Christians don’t become strong through the message of Christian Liberty, but through the message and power of the Gospel.
