The Bible is Full of Indicative/Imperative Imperative/Indicative Connections

March 14, 2013 by Jared Sparks Leave a Comment

1 Sam 12:24 Only fear The Lord and serve Him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.

Samuel gave his farewell address to Israel and finished with the above verse as has second to last sentence. Take a look at the first part of the verse. The commands are to fear The Lord and to serve Him faithfully with all of their hearts. This sounds simply but we know the story of the OT and the reality of the human heart don’t we? They/we fail.
Now move on and read the rest of the verse. Ah!!! He is some help for the hearers. Samuel tells them that they have to consider (imperative) something. If the people are going to look at all like the first part of the verse they are going to need the second. As in the NT the OT lays down God’s work as the proper motivation for obeying God. So Samuel commands them to consider what God has done (Indicative). The problem was they they failed to consider. This happens time and time again through the bible. This was precisely what happened after the death of Joshua (Judges 2:10), they did not know what The Lord had done therefore they worshiped other gods.
God’s people of old had the shadowy redemption from Egypt to look back on. We today have the beautify realities of the good news of Jesus life, death, and resurrection in the place of sinners to the Glory of God. Jesus is the one that faithfully served His Father with all His heart and He did that in my place. So let us/me consider….
