This Sunday is week two in our “He IS” Sermon series. I will be preaching from Matt 26:47-56. I want to give you men, and women, a little teaser before tomorrow so here is a couple thoughts about the text for the men. Ladies this is for you too, I will explain more tomorrow. Jesus is the man! In the last 15 or so years, their has been a great call for Christian men to stand up and be MEN. However, many times the definitions of what it means to be a man are quite incomplete. To often we define biblical manhood as simply a flannel shirt wearing fisherman who spends a lot of time with his sons. While wearing flannel most defiantly makes a male a man, I think there is more to it. Jesus is “The Man” who shows Christian men how to actually be men. He shows us that being a man is about Glorifying the Father in every circumstance. This is evident in vs 50 of our passage this week when the text says “Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him”. This is an interesting text. Jesus seems so passive, why does He just passively let Himself be mistreated? This text does not make Jesus look very manly does it? For the sake of brevity stop and read both John 10:17-18 and John 18:6 and don’t make me write it out. Jesus willingly chose to let Himself be seized. For the Glory of the Father (Jn 12:27-28) Jesus was obedient. Jesus shows us men that obedience out of passion for God’s glory is what it looks like to be a man. This is good news for us men. I see Jesus and see the best man who has ever lived. I see myself next to Him and see that I am a complete and total failure when it comes to sufficient obedience to God. Understanding this difference between Jesus and myself is my only chance at becoming a better man. What we have to understand is that Jesus was the perfect man. We have to understand that if we are in Christ we are credited by His work as being perfect men. Only be understanding this are we freed from chasing after false ideas of manhood. Being a biblical man is about being transformed by truly “Seeing” the work of Jesus and then living every area of our lives to the Glory of His Name. May the Glory of God be the pursuit of our life as we see Jesus new every day. Can’t wait for tomorrow!
