Sermon Outline

June 11, 2014 by Jared Sparks Leave a Comment

2 Tim 3:16-4:5
The Authority of the Bible

Intro: Stand Alone Sermon
  • Do you believe the bible?
  • Is the bible your ultimate authority? Or what feels right to you?
  • God has perfectly revealed the same things to us all.
  • 1 Meaning many applications
  • Red letter/Black letter
  • Can we trust the bible and do you believe the bible?

Paul to Timothy

  • Pastoral Epistles

Vs 16 The Bible is God-Breathed
  • All The Scriptures are the words of God “God has spoken”
    • Kevin Deyoung Quote
    • OT and NT “1 Tim 5:18, 1 Cor 14:37, 2 Pet 3:16“
    • A great many learned men are defending the gospel; no doubt it is a very proper and right thing to do, yet I always notice that, when there are most books of that kind, it is because the gospel itself is not being preached. Suppose a number of persons were to take it into their heads that they had to defend a lion, a full-grown king of beasts! There he is in the cage, and here come all the soldiers of the army to fight for him. Well, I should suggest to them, if they would not object, and feel that it was humbling to them, that they should kindly stand back, and open the door, and let the lion out! I believe that would be the best way of defending him, for he would take care of himself; and the best “apology” for the gospel is to let the gospel out. Never mind about defending Deuteronomy or the whole of the Pentateuch; preach Jesus Christ and him crucified. Let the Lion out, and see who will dare to approach him. The Lion of the tribe of Judah will soon drive away all his adversaries.
  • ALL Red Letter not just Jesus words. 1899 First Red Letter bible published
  • We all have the same revelation. The bible.
Profitable for?
Teaching
  • Christians are taught by the bible. All is profitable.
  • The bible is right
Reproof
  • Tells us where we are wrong
  • In our actions
  • In our theology.
  • The problem of Embedded theology and “Internal Feelings”
Correction
  • Corrects our thoughts of God.
  • The bible corrects our thoughts of the bible.
  • The bible tells us what to do.

Training in Righteousness

  • This book is our training regiment. This book is about Jesus Vs 15

Vs 17 The Bible is all The Christian needs (Although God gives more)

  • That we may be complete
  • If you never “Hear” from God. You have all you need!
  • God has spoken. He speaks every time you read this book.

Because of the Authority of the Word: What?

Vs 1-2A  The Preachers Call? Preach The Word
  • Before God. Preach!
  • God is the judge of the living and dead and you Timothy. Preach!
  • James 3:1
  • The Word not Timothy’s Word. The preacher is bound to the word!

Vs 2b In Season and Out

  • Faithfulness is not about seasons.
  • Reprove & Correct (Show us we have broken the LAW)
  • Rebuke (Warn)
  • Exhort (Gospel Goodness)
  • With complete patience and teaching
Vs 3-4 A Time is Coming
  • People will “Discern” Sound teaching and be okay with false teaching.
  • Want teachers to agree with them!
  • Passion of people will trump biblical truth. “That’s not the god I know”
  • Turn away and cling to “Myths”.
  • The pharisees used the bible!

Vs 5 Timothy: As for you
  • When people leave and it’s out of season?
  • Be sober minded. Don’t freak out!
  • Endure the pain
  • Do the work of evangelism
  • Fulfill your ministry.. PREACH THE WORD

What about us?

  • What is our/your highest authority?
  • Modern sensibilities? What your favorite teacher says? What feels right to you?
  • Or the bible?
  • You are never without a word from the Lord.
  • God has spoken and you can trust Him.
