Pastoral counseling affirms what is also evident in my own life. It is easier to see other people’s sin than it is to see my own. The bible says something about this “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?” Matt. 7:3. Time after time I have to charge myself and other men and women to turn the inner Hubble Telescope away from others and toward ourselves. “What is your sin in this” can be the hardest question to answer. So what are we to do when we see other people around us fumbling about in sin and stupidity? Repent.
Men, God tells us that we are servant leaders in the home and church. Let me challenge you to lead the way in repentance for your family, church, friends, and coworkers. Do you take your own sin seriously? Are you fighting your own sin with the weapon called gospel? Are you inviting other people in your life to help you fight your sin with the gospel’s power? If you want people in your life to stop being so stupid, you lead the way running from your stupid island/law living. Men if you are in Christ you have been saved in spite of you and your eminence sinfulness, deadness, stupidity. It is by experiencing and understanding grace that will lead you into repentance. When the Holy Spirit makes us more and more aware of our own sinfulness the more we stand in awe of the mighty grace of God seen in Jesus life, death, and resurrection. It is there that we see how big of a deal our sin really is. It is there we see our complete forgiveness. It is there we see our complete righteousness. It is there we find our source and power for sanctification. So men, our repentance flows from forgiveness not for forgiveness. By grace, lead the way.
