Labels Belong on Jelly Jars: Not People

March 27, 2014 by Jared Sparks Leave a Comment

I have often heard my pastor say “Labels belong on Jelly jars, not people”. This idea caused me to ask “Why have I been so quick to label myself?” I think I have found the main answer to that question. I have wanted self and peer validation by who a particular label assosiated myself with. I do not assume everyone else does this but I have. The question was not am I Reformed/Arminian, Charasmatic/Cessationist, Complentarian/Egalitarian, Missional/Seeker, Paedo/Credo, Pre/Mid/Post/Amill/PostMill, but why did I need to be so quick to tell you? Why was my validation in Christ and title as a Christian not enough? Why was labeling myself worth the confusion that it brought to those around me? Not that all labels are bad, but there certainly is a right and wrong way to wear them. So my question for you….. Why the need for YOU to label yourself?
