It has been my privilege to preach through the book of John. I serve as the “Assistant Pastor” or the “Pastor’s Assistant”, depending on who you ask, at Christian Covenant Fellowship in Carterville. One of the responsibilities that our elders have given me is to preach ever other week. I felt God leading me to preach through the book of John so we have slowly just been walking through the book together. One of the things that I have realized during this series that Jesus could definitely be considered “A broken record.” This week I will be preaching John 5:30-47. Sure enough, Jesus is up to it again? So what is it that Jesus is up too?
Well, over and over again Jesus tears down external religion. In our passage this week Jesus tell a group of highly devout Jewish people, who studied the bob, that they do not have the word of God dwelling in them. Jesus sees right through the external religious performance and into the cold dead hearts that were seeking glory form men and not God. You see Jesus is driving people to see how hopeless the “I can do what God requires” lie truly is. Person after person, group after group believe they themselves can be right before God by their own efforts. Jesus begs to differ. So time and time again Jesus brings us back to the reality that humans are hopelessly needy, that we have sinned against God, and that Jesus himself comes for just such people. Jesus is the only one that lived a perfect life and he did it in our place. Jesus is driving us to see our need and His abundant supply. So down with external, false, religiosity. Jesus is hear to bring freedom and change you from the inside out! That is some good news! See you Sunday!
