“JESUS MAY NOT LET YOU LEAVE EVERYTHING”

February 7, 2014 by Jared Sparks Leave a Comment

Luke 8:38-39 esv “The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you”. And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.”

This man wanted to leave everything and follow Jesus. He wanted to do what Jesus commended other people for doing in Matt 19:29. Jesus, however, would not let the man do what he felt like he was “supposed” to do. For this man to take up his cross and follow Jesus, it meant going home and telling people about what God had done for him.

It is common for Christians men and women to feel a sense of false guilt. “Those people who do big things for God are the ones who really love Jesus.”  Maybe this is because God is calling you to foreign missions or could it be that you are not resting in the finished work of Christ and His word to you, “Stay home, and tell all that God has done for you.”

The bible teaches that every Christian is missionary, some here and some abroad. I pray that we would understand it is not just foreign missionaries who are called, but we who are here are called as well.
