How to Misuse the Word “Actually”

January 5, 2015 by Jared Sparks Leave a Comment

I caught myself being incredibly arrogant and insulting. I used the word “actually”. Certainly there are many appropriate ways to use this word, but on this one occasion my misuse of the word revealed a lot about myself. I was in a discipleship meeting and the man across from me said something very insightful. My response was “That is actually very helpful”. Did you catch that? 3 quick thoughts.
1. I insinuated that I was surprised by insight of my friend.
2. My arrogance was revealed. I thought if anyone would bring such good insight it would be me.
3. I revealed an insecurity about myself. I wanted to be the wise one.

So….. I don’t use the word “Actually” in that way anymore.
