Every year I read through the bible. This morning I read Romans 9. Here are a few brief thoughts about the chapter.
- It is a very clear chapter.
- It is a very hard chapter.
- If your reading does not lead you to ask “Is God just?” and “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” Then you are reading it wrong.
- Answers to those questions? God is just and stop talking back to God, this is the way it is (Jared’s paraphrase).
- The chapter has a sting to it.
- I am so thankful that salvation depends on God’s mercy instead of my will and exertion.
- It is completely compatible with Rom 10:13 “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” I don’t understand how it is compatible but it is because the bible says so.
- It means what it says. Don’t be like John Wesley who said “Whatever it means it can’t mean that”.
- You must get past the questions raised in the chapter and cling to the answers given. God is just. You can trust him. Stop talking back.
