I wrote this catechism on James as I recently worked my way preaching through it. It is not a theological or systematic catechism. It is simply a catechism on the book of James, using mostly the language of James himself, to help one remember the contents of the book.<\/p>\n

A: <\/b>We are to show no partiality as we hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: <\/b>If a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, \u201cYou sit here in a good place,\u201d while you say to the poor man, \u201cYou stand over there,\u201d or, \u201cSit down at my feet,\u201d have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>You see that a person is justified by his works.<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>The tongue is also a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>It is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>A harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: <\/b>What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you?<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>It is our passions that are at war within us.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: <\/b>Why do you not have?<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>You do not have, because you do not ask.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Q: <\/b>Why do you ask and not receive?<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: <\/b>Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>Yes, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world marks himself an enemy of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>He gives more grace.<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>The one who speaks evil against a brother or judges a brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law.<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>If you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>My life is a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: <\/b>Does God care about your life?<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>Yes, God sent His Son into history to have compassion on sinners and care for little mists such as me, so that though I vanish from this earth, I will be with Jesus forever in a resurrected and glorified body.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: <\/b>What ought you to say about tomorrow?<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>I ought to say, \u201cIf the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>No, all such boasting is evil.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: <\/b>Why are the rich spoken of to weep and howl?<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>They are to weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon them.<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>Their riches have rotted and their garments are moth-eaten.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Q: <\/b>What has happened to their gold and silver?<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>Their gold and silver have corroded.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Q: <\/b>What cries out against them?<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>The wages of the laborers who mowed their fields, which they kept back by fraud, cried out against them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: <\/b>Whose ears have these cries reached?<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>Jesus Christ is the Righteous One. Like a lamb before its shearers is silent, He did not resist them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: <\/b>What motivation does James give to the brothers to be patient?<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>He tells them to be patient for the coming of the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>He tells them to see how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains.<\/span><\/p>\n
