The phrase, though small, is quite profound: “Think much on grace, Christian.”

We don’t think much as entertainment-stricken 21st century Americans. We do just about everything to avoid it. But when we do think, it is often thoughts that are full of anxiety, worry, fear, and the like. “What if?” is a thought Christians think far too much; myself included.

But oh, for our sanity, may we think much on grace.

There are two primary ways in which thoughts of grace might fill our minds. The first is thinking on the principle of grace. In whatever season or situation of life, we would afford much grace to ourselves to think deeply on how we have better than we deserve. Fixing the mind on the thought that every smidgen of goodness we experience is that much more than what is owed us will do wonders to the human heart. If we have much, the principle of grace can bring us to our knees in humility. If we have little, every itching for more is put to ease at the thought of grace.

But may we not stop at simply the principle of grace! For it is not the principle of grace that saves. May we venture on deeper into grace. May we find ourselves so deep in the thick of the grace of the Scriptures that we become engulfed with The Person of grace. May we find our hearts wrapped up into the incarnation of grace – the Lord Jesus Christ Himself! When the hurricanes of life rage around us may we think much on the Lord Jesus Christ as He lay there asleep during the storm. May our thoughts move us to the cross where the Lord was tossed to and fro by the raging waves of God’s wrath. May we think much on that grace that put Him there in our place.

When we think much on biblical grace, we think much on Jesus. He is our grace.

Let us also note that the duty to think much on grace is the duty of the Christian. It is the duty of the one who has been saved to think much on Christ, who is saving him, and who will save him. May we fixate our brains on thoughts of the gracious condescension of our Lord Jesus Christ who stooped down to us, down to the grave, to come up again, and to bring us up with Him.

If we think much on Christ, we will never run out of things to think of. Nor will we ever be short on thoughts of comfort (or conviction for that matter). Our minds could never rummage through to the ends of grace. Our brain cells do not have the capacity to reach the height, depth, width, or length of the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Experiencing a sleepless night with anxious thoughts? Think much on grace, Christian. Is the grind of the work day cumbersome? Think much on grace, Christian. Is your school day boring? Think much on grace, Christian. Are you having a day where you can’t do anything right? Think much on grace, Christian. Are the feelings of loneliness hugging you tight? Think much on grace, Christian.

What a thought it is to think of Christ. May our skulls be full of Him.

I recently heard an interview with Christian George in which he quoted a small phrase found in a Charles Spurgeon sermon.
