Million Dollar Gospel, Pt. 2

June 29, 2016 by Joshua Jenkins Leave a Comment

In my previous post I talked about some gospel that I saw in the movie, Million Dollar Arm. There is one more gospel picture in the movie that I wanted to write on. I didn’t feel that it fit with my last post, thus I’ve given it it’s own post.

In the movie, sports agent J.B. Bernstein goes to the country of India to search for athletes that he could potentially have trained into becoming Major League Baseball pitchers. While he is over there, he meets a physically underwhelming Indian man named Amit, who can speak English and the native tongue. Amit is a very enthusiastic character who claims to love the game of baseball and desperately wants to become a coach. He tells Bernstein that he’d happily work for free as his translator – of which he does throughout the movie.

At the end of the movie, the two Indian pitchers-that Bernstein brought to America to train-have one final major league tryout after blowing their first tryout. While the boys have been training to become baseball players, Amit has been training and studying how to become a baseball coach. Just before the ballplayers take the mound to begin the tryout, Amit runs out to the boys to give them a pep talk and calm their nerves.

Visibly nervous and unsure of himself, Amit unctions up some courage and gives these words of inspiration: “I have always wanted to be a baseball player. But now you two are baseball players. I am seeing my dreams played out in you. Your victory is my victory.” Amit went on with a few more words of invigoration; but that was enough to stick with me.

“Your victory is my victory.”

That is the essence of the gospel. Christ’s victory is our victory. For those who are in Christ Jesus, we have been given all that is his. Christ’s perfect life of obedience to God the Father is ours. Christ’s triumph over sin and death is ours too. The peace and joy of Jesus is ours. Ephesians 1 describes how in Christ, we have received every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. We win because Jesus has won. We receive the reward that Christ has won.

Jesus’ victory is our victory.
